Alligators and Pythons and Marines, Oh My!
Hegseth is deploying more Marines
The Marines are on the move again. This time to the so-called Alligator Alcatraz. I guess alligators and pythons aren’t enough of a deterrent. Now Marines are needed to … I’m not sure what.
According to the US Northern Command, the Marines
“…will perform strictly non-law enforcement duties within ICE facilities focusing primarily on administrative and logistical tasks. They are prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody.”
Sooooo … what does that mean? Filing in the office? Directing traffic in the parking lot? Chasing alligators and pythons back into the swamp? Cleaning up their poop?
How can you work in an ICE detention facility and have no contact with detainees?
That’s the military’s view of the situation. Here’s what the Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin says about the deployment:
“The Marines will be trained and ready to assist with immigration processing at locations across the state of Florida, consistent with the whole-of-government approach to deliver on President Trump’s mandate from the American people to remove public safety threats from American communities.”
