AOC vs. Schumer

It’s the classic clash of youth and old age

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is pushing back against Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) over a spending bill.

Schumer published an impassioned op-ed in the NYT today trying to justify his vote in support of the continuing resolution passed by the House. His reasoning sounds reasonable — keep the government open so the most vulnerable among us are not hurt as Trump-led Republicans have given Democrats a choice of going along with Trump’s spending priorities or shutting down the government.

Schumer also pointed out that a government shutdown would give Trump and Musk carte blanche to choose which departments are essential and which can be shut down, their employees laid off with no guarantee that they will ever be rehired.

It would also empower the Republican majorities in both Houses with the same choice: which departments and agencies to reopen and which to keep shut after the shutdown was over.

AOC, on the other hand, is furiously opposing what she terms Schumer’s acquiescence to agree to the House spending plan. She accuses the Democratic senators “for their decision to completely roll over and give up on protecting the Constitution.”
