As envisioned by the Founding Fathers, serving in the US Congress was not meant to be a full-time career. Their idea was that citizens would go to Washington for a few months to serve in government and then return home to their full-time occupations.

Additionally, the average lifespan of Americans in 1776 was 35, so no one would have been serving in Congress decade after decade after decade as they do now when the average lifespan has increased to 78 years.

The way our government works now is nothing like what was intended when the Founding Fathers were creating the country.

So yes, we need term limits and retirement ages to ensure regular turnover and allow young people to determine the kind of future that they want to live in, not the future that the geriatric set wants them to live in.

Do you allow your parents and grandparents to determine how you live your life? No, absolutely not. You make your own choices. Our government should act the same way, allowing young people to decide what kind of a world they want to live in.
