DeSantis’ Immigration Law Is Slowing Cleanup After the Hurricane
Most of the people who do the cleanup have left the state
This one is filed under “MAGA morons don’t think things through.” I opened the New York Times this morning to this delightful headline: “DeSantis’s Immigration Law May Affect Hurricane Cleanup in Florida.”
I laughed so hard that tears were running down my face. I’m still giggling as I write this.
So, we all remember DeSantis’ hardcore immigration law that took effect on July 1, right? Hospitals have to ask patients about their immigration status and if they are undocumented, keep track of the cost of their care. Employers with more than 25 employees have to use E-Verify to ensure that all of them are here legally. Out-of-state drivers’ licenses issued to undocumented immigrants are not recognized in Florida. And, last, but certainly not least, it is now a felony to transport undocumented workers into Florida.
Sure enough, immigrants, both documented and undocumented, pulled up stakes and moved out of the state. In case you’re wondering why immigrants who are here legally or are naturalized citizens would leave, many of them have family members who are undocumented, so the entire family leaves to protect the undocumented…
