DeSantis Wants Florida Students to Learn That Slavery Was Good

In his version of Black history, slavery was a benefit because it taught skills to Black people

I spit out my coffee again this morning when I read that the Florida Board of Education is now mandating that as part of the curriculum for Black History in middle schools, students will be taught that

“Slavery gave Black people a ‘personal benefit’ because they ‘developed skills.’”

And high school students will be taught that the Ocoee (Florida) massacre, wherein a mob of white people attacked and killed Black people to prevent them from voting in the 1920 presidential election, included

“… acts of violence perpetrated against and by African Americans.

Scuse me while I double-check that I still live in America.

I don’t even know where to start. Actually, I do know where to start. Let’s start with DeSantis who is behind this. He wants a school curriculum that “shields white students from feeling any sense of guilt for wrongs perpetrated against people of color.”

In addition to being breathtakingly racist, that goal demonstrates DeSantis’ appalling ignorance of world history. Because if he…
