I live in NJ which has a long shoreline. We don't get as many or as destructive hurricanes as Florida. We get Nor'Easters, which are just as destructive. Even minor storms now flood the shore towns, but the residents just shrug it off. After larger storms, they rebuild their homes and their businesses and whine until the federal government funds beach replenishment. I want to shake them and say "this is NOT NORMAL. These storms are telling you that living along the current shoreline is not tenable." But no one listens or cares. Even when a superstorm like Sandy whipes out almost everything, instead of holding discussions about retreating from the shore, we are all supposed to feel sorry for shore residents and help them rebuild IN THE SAME DAMN PLACE.
