Is This the End of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker?
The Freedom Caucus is unhappy with him
I was really surprised when the debt limit deal negotiated by Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R) and President Biden (D) passed both the House and the Senate.
Was the entire Freedom Caucus absent on the day of the vote? Cuz that budget deal wasn’t anything like the bill they had originally passed.
Like nowhere near.
It suspends the debt limit for longer (two years) than they wanted. It cuts federal spending by waaaaay less than they wanted. And it doesn’t cut off as many people as they wanted from safety net provisions.
Cuz Republicans hate free handouts for the poor. They are fine with them for the obscenely wealthy because they donate to campaigns. The poor never do that.
The debt limit bill was so awful from the point of view of the Freedom Caucus that Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) called it a “turd sandwich” and a betrayal.
He’s right you know. Not about the turd sandwich. Although I do wonder how he knows what a turd sandwich tastes like.

If you recall … I recall because I watched the entire thing … McCarthy was elected Speaker only after he promised…
