It's a history thing. The US was founded by protestants who believed that people have to look out for themselves. Literally: "God helps those who help themselves." I was raised as a Presbyterian, so I had to listen to this shit every fucking day.

Any kind of governmental support is considered unGodly. Socialism = unGodly. Communism = unGodly.

We are all expected to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps. We advance in life by our own efforts. Anyone who fails is considered weak.
