Why am I not surprised that Trump chose Vance as his VP?

No one should be surprised that Trump picked Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio to be his running mate. No one. We know Trump very well by now. And we know that he values two things above all else: loyalty and agreeing that he won the 2020 election.

Of the three people on his short-list of vice-presidential candidates, only one fit the bill, Vance. The other two, Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida have both run against Trump for president, Rubio in 2016 and Burgum in 2024.

The only reason that Vance hasn’t run against Trump for President is because he is so new on the political scene. His first run for office was in the 2022 midterms when he ran for the Senate in Ohio, earning Trump’s endorsement with his performance in the debates in the run-up to the election.

Vance is nakedly ambitious, so a presidential run is definitely in his future. By marrying his fortunes to Trump’s he probably hopes to find himself in the Oval Office sooner, rather than later. Trump is overweight, out of shape and old. He could drop over dead at any time.

And then there’s that little dementia thing. Yeah, a little 25th amendment nudge and good ol’ JD is livin’ large in the White House and looking at…
