Kevin McCarthy Proposes Returning as Speaker of the House
And a little bit about the new speaker who is not McCarthy
I really, really didn’t want to write about Trump or the speaker election today. I don’t know about you, but I need a palate cleanser. And I had found the perfect topic, part outrage, part resignation with a little fangirling thrown in.
No, not about my guy, Gav. My second fave, John Fetterman. Just don’t tell his wife, okay?
But then I saw this little gem and my head kinda exploded. Assistant Speaker? Are you shitting me?
So, a quick recap. Matt Gaetz (insert your favorite expletive here) pulled the fire alarm and fired former speaker Kevin McCarthy aka My Kevin. As in Trump’s pet House speaker. This set off a feeding frenzy of wanna-be speakers.
First up was McCarthy’s number two, Steve Scalise, who tossed his hat in the ring. And quickly retrieved it when the extremists in the caucus deemed him too moderate.
Next, Jim Jordan, in all his jacket-less glory, stepped up. Nuthin’ moderate about him. His plan to reach 217 votes was to threaten and bully his fellow Republicans into crowning him speaker. Trump endorsed him and for a very brief time, Jordan looked like a shoo-in.
