North Carolina Has a New Secret Police Force

The new Gov Ops does not require search warrants or any public disclosure of its activities

You can add North Carolina to your list of No-Go States. The Republican state legislature has established a new secret police force. The Democratic governor tried to veto the legislation, but the Republicans have a veto-proof majority and easily overrode his veto.

The official name of the new entity is the Joint Legislative Committee on Government Operations, but its nickname tells you all you need to know about its function: Gov Ops. Sounds like something out of a dystopian novel or movie, doesn’t it?

So, what is Gov Ops tasked with doing? Its portfolio is quite expansive. It has the authority to investigate “possible instances of misfeasance, malfeasance, nonfeasance, mismanagement, waste, abuse, or illegal conduct.”

Lots of room for abuse there, wouldn’t you agree? Especially because it doesn’t need search warrants to conduct searches on public or private property. And you are not allowed to consult with an attorney if you think that your rights are being violated by those searches.
