Ohio Legislature Is Trying to Block Implementation of Abortion Amendment
They are trying to strip the courts of authority over the repeal of existing abortion laws
What the hell is going on in Ohio? Ohioans, like most sensible people, voted to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution by amending it. The Republican state legislature is not having it.
The legislature has tried mightily to prevent the passage of the amendment. First, they tried to change the threshold for approving amendments to the constitution to 60% from 50%, which required a special election.
They held the special election in August figuring no one would show up at the polls. Spoiler alert — never underestimate the determination of women trying to maintain control over their own bodies. The ballot measure went down in flames.
Next, the Republicans voted to rewrite the amendment “to a Republican-authored summary littered with inflammatory and fearmongering language.” That didn’t stop those same determined women from voting for the amendment which was Issue 1 on the ballot.
