Should Justice Sotomayor Resign?

There is a small window of opportunity to replace her with another liberal justice

Hey, did you hear the one about the elderly Supreme Court justice who was asked to retire so that the president could appoint a younger liberal justice to their seat? No, not RBG. I’m talking about Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Yup, it’s déjà vu all over again.

Except no one is pressuring her to resign. They’d rather talk about it behind her back or to the press. Or both.

So here’s the argument why she should resign. She’s the oldest liberal justice on the court at 69, she’ll be 70 in June. Which is not exactly old and decrepit like some pols I could name. Actually, a lot of them.

She has Type 1 diabetes. That’s the kind that you develop as a kid and have forever. You can’t diet or exercise your way out of it like you can with Type 2. Used to be that Type 1 diabetics rarely lived to age 40. Now they live long, healthy lives thanks to better monitoring and management of their disease.
