According to him, the Constitution does not mean what is actually written in the document

Hoo, boy. I knew that when we got an evangelical Christian in the Speaker’s chair, that there were going to be problems. Evangelical Christians are all into taking things literally and originalism and all that shit. And this one’s a doozy.

According to our illustrious Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson (R-La.), we’ve all been reading the Constitution wrong:

“When the Founders set this system up, they wanted a vibrant expression of faith in the public square because they believed that a general moral consensus and virtue was necessary. The separation of church and state is a misnomer; people misunderstand it.”

I dunno. Seems pretty clear to me:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

The way I was taught to interpret that phrase is that the Constitution prohibits a national religion. Additionally, people are allowed to worship however they please with no interference from the government.
