I pointed out that we used to have elder statesmen:
“We used to have an institution called elder statesmen. These were former legislators, governors, judges, presidents, etc who were considered (or considered themselves) to be too old to hold office.
They made themselves available to current officeholders for advice, guidance and historical perspective. That way, their years of accumulated knowledge and wisdom was still available to the country without all of those embarrassing missteps that come with holding office way longer than they should have.”
I agree with you that we don’t want to lose the knowledge and wisdom of our seniors, but that doesn’t mean that they are fit to hold national office. They need to step back from governing while continuing to offer advice and guidance to younger officeholders.
