The first house i owned was haunted. THe ghost would hide small objects like keys or scissors. I Would find them in crazy places around the house. LIke you, i got into the habit of asking for the items to be returned if i needed them immediately. THe ghost would always return them fairly quickly. PEople thought i was nuts so i stopped talking about it.
