The Texas Governor May Soon Be Able to Overturn Elections

Will other red state legislatures give their governors the same power?

Heads up, red state governors. Over in Texas …

Say it with me: “It’s always Texas.”

Over in Texas, the Senate has passed a bill that gives the governor the power to overturn elections. The bill now goes to the Texas House which is controlled by Republicans. So I guess it’s gonna pass. And the governor, Greg Abbott, will of course sign it into law.

So what the hell happened?

Back in 2022, a few polling stations in Harris County, home of Houston, the largest city in Texas, ran out of ballot paper.

It’s the 21st century. Who the hell is still using paper ballots? Does no one remember hanging chads?

The problem wasn’t so much that the polling places ran out of paper ballots, it’s that Republicans lost the county. In their tiny, paranoid minds, that means that the Republican vote was suppressed by the lack of paper ballots.

No surprise there.

Here’s the surprise: the missing ballot paper did not affect the outcome of the election in Harris County. Voters in the affected precincts had the option…
