I was going to write about gun control and Texas today. A couple of interesting things came out of the Texas Republican Party’s convention held the weekend of June 18 and 19, 2022.

But then this popped up in my feed today. It’s yet another plank adopted by the Texas Republicans for their platform for the midterm elections in November.

“Texas retains the right to secede from the United States, and the Texas Legislature should be called upon to pass a referendum consistent thereto.”

Yup, the Texas Republican Party wants a referendum on the 2023 ballot on whether Texas should secede from the U.S. and “reassert its status as an independent nation.”

Quick history lesson: Texas was originally part of Mexico. It fought a war with Mexico and became an independent nation, the Republic of Texas, in 1836. “Remember the Alamo” and all that.

Texans wanted to become a part of the United States but the U.S. rejected Texas so they had to “settle” for being an independent nation.

This lasted until 1845 when the U.S. annexed Texas. Texas was finally admitted as the 28th state in 1846.
