This doesn’t work with a toxic boss. My last boss took credit for my ideas and then used the fact that my name wasn’t on anything to give me a poor performance review for not contributing anything. I learned the hard way to tell everyone my ideas BEFORE I told my boss (or copied the entire department on emails) so that when he claimed credit, everyone knew he was lying. And going to HR is always a bad idea. HR exists to protect managers, not workers. I learned a hard lesson about that when I complained about discrimination (I was the only woman in the department). HR did an “investigation" and determined that I was a troublemaker and wrote me up for bad behavior.
