Trump Is Trying to Interfere in the House Speaker Election

He is trying to sabotage the candidacy of Tom Emmer

The speaker election saga continues. And, of course, Trump has to get involved. It’s not enough that he bestows his “Complete and Total Endorsement” on his favored speaker candidates. Now, he is trying to stop a candidate.

And why is Trump trying to stop a candidate? Not because he’s a poor candidate. Of course not. Everything is personal with Trump. Trump doesn’t like him. Feels that he has been disloyal.

The candidate in question is House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.). A whip in Congress is a member of a party who “whips” votes, i.e., they pressure caucus members to vote for legislation being advanced by their party.

The whip is elected by their party members in both houses of Congress making Emmer the only Republican currently running for Speaker of the House who has actually won an internal party election. This should give him an advantage over the other speaker hopefuls who have never won an internal party election.

So, what’s Trump’s problem with Emmer? Well, on January 6, 2021, Emmer did not vote to overturn the 2020 election. To make matters worse, in the 2022 midterms, he advised candidates not to focus on…
