Two Civil Rights Groups Are Trying to Get Trump Disqualified From Running

They are invoking the Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause

I’m on Trump Head Explosion watch. Two civil rights groups, Mi Familia Vota and Free Speech for People, have started a campaign that they are calling “Trump is Disqualified.”

Their goal is to convince the secretaries of state in California, Colorado, Georgia, Nevada, and Oregon to disqualify Trump from the ballot in 2024 under the Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause of the 14th Amendment. That’s the clause that says that anyone who swore to uphold the Constitution and then goes on to engage in “insurrection or rebellion” against the U.S. is permanently barred from running for government office again.

Oh. My. God. Forget about his head exploding. If they are successful, Trump may spontaneously combust.

So, here’s the thing. The clause is very specific:

“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State…
