We Are Living in Interesting Times
We’ve seen a lot of firsts this year
You guys, we’ve been cursed. I’m serious. Back in January, somebody must have said “May you live in interesting times,” and it’s been downhill ever since.
For the uninitiated, the expression “may you live in interesting times” is supposedly an ancient Chinese curse where the word “interesting” has a negative meaning.
As in the first speaker election back in January. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was so determined to be Speaker of the House that he was willing to grovel to the feral members of the Freedom Caucus while enduring the humiliation of 15 ballots.
That humiliation came with its own curse — be careful what you wish for. He tried to act like an adult and work with Democrats on a debt ceiling and a continuing resolution to keep the government open, but the feral children of the House Freedom Caucus weren’t having it and pulled the plug on his speakership.
And now we are back in those interesting times. Another wannabe speaker, Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) forced multiple ballots in his vain attempt to wrest the speaker gavel from its temporary holder, Speaker Pro Tempore, Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.).
